Magnesium: BWT, Europe's leading water technology company adds the essential vital mineral to drinking water

  • According to a WHO study, a large proportion of the global population suffer from magnesium deficiency – this affects up to 40% of people in Germany.
  • According to the German Consumer Advice Centre, tablets can, however, lead to overdoses of the key mineral.
  • BWT, Europe's leading water technology company, adds magnesium to drinking water via a pioneering invention in the form of magnesium ions, and therefore without the addition of salts.

The vital mineral magnesium is a true all-rounder: in our cells, it is responsible for activating a multitude of approximately 300 enzymes and carrier proteins, which in turn is essential for muscle and nerve functions, balancing blood-glucose levels and for regulating blood pressure.1 Due to modern diets and depletion in arable land, our bodies no longer consume as much magnesium as would be healthy: a study by the World Health Organisation determined as early as 2006 that a large proportion of the population are affected by a magnesium deficiency. The VERA nutrition study places a figure on this in Germany of up to 40 percent. The consequences of a deficient supply of this vital mineral are not to be underestimated: people with a magnesium deficiency are at risk of calf muscle cramps and, in the worst case, cardiac rhythm irregularities.
To remain fit and healthy, many people resort to magnesium tablets. In Germany, however - according to experts from the Consumer Advice Centre and the latest study published in October 2016 - these often contain more than the daily dose of magnesium recommended by the DGE (German Agency for Nutrition).

Greater water safety, better taste and vitality
With the BWT Magnesium Mineralizer from the Austrian water technology company, magnesium can be consumed via drinking water in small doses spread over the day very easily and cost-effectively. For example, 2.7 litres of BWT Magnesium Mineralized Water contains as much magnesium as approximately seven apples.2 Our body is much better and more sustainably able to absorb this vital mineral when magnesium is carefully delivered in this way instead of via one strong daily dose - a true benefit in comparison to magnesium tablets and capsules. Conventional tablets contain magnesium in the form of magnesium salts, and often other additives as well. Via the Magnesium Mineralizer, magnesium is added in the form of magnesium ions. As opposed to tablets, magnesium salts are therefore not necessary. Also, the risk of overdosing which exists with tablets is completely ruled out with the Magnesium Mineralizer due to the maximum intake of fluids. The goal is the best possible safety for consumers.

"With the invention of the patented Magnesium Mineralizer, the BWT development team has created a global sensation: for the first time, the additional safety of drinking water is coupled with a fresh taste and the positive effects of magnesium. And all of this without having to haul bottles, and with water from the tap. The intake of magnesium is, for many consumers, an additional incentive to drink sufficient water. With just one Magnesium Mineralizer filter cartridge, the contents of approximately 120 one-litre water bottles can be mineralized and filtered. This innovation thus has global potential for the reduction of packaging and transport. The Magnesium Mineralizer is therefore the perfect ambassador for the BWT philosophy: Best Water Technology – For You and Planet Blue“, explains Gerald Steger, the new member of the BWT managing board, speaking enthusiastically about the positive added value for customers and the global demand.

Less chlorine – more magnesium: the BWT Magnesium Mineralizer

The BWT Magnesium Mineralizer works in two steps: in the first step, it reduces the amount of substances impairing taste and smell, such as chlorine, but also, more importantly, organic compounds such as herbicides and pesticides. In the second step, it reduces any heavy metals such as lead, copper, nickel or cobalt which may have found their way into the water via (old) water pipes and replaces the hardener mineral, calcium, with essential magnesium. A practical side effect: household appliances are also protected against the build up of limescale, thus increasing their service life. Through this process, the filtered water becomes physiologically much more valuable to people in comparison to previous filter technologies, and also becomes a unique taste experience.
Because magnesium is also a taste carrier, the aroma of tea and coffee made with magnesium mineralized drinking water is emphasised, and, enjoyed pure, it is impressive with its gourmet taste. Thanks to the magnesium, the water tastes particularly natural, balanced and fresh.
