Organic & inorganic ingredients

Inorganic ingredients

Depending on the type of geology through which the water flows within the water cycle, it contains different quantities of sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, manganese, copper, zinc, chlorides, fluorides and sulphates as well as nitrates, nitrites, phosphates and silicates.

Organic ingredients

Organic ingredients can be of natural origin, e.g. humic acids. They are, however, also caused by human beings. Organic and inorganic harmful substances enter the water circuit from different sources. They may not all be removed through conventional sewage purification and may cause damage to our ecosystem.

Type of harmful substance Main sources Harmful effect
Organic material
e.g. excrement, food waste, substances based on carbon
Industrial and domestic waste water Decomposition reduces the oxygen content of the water, microbes die.
Toxic organic compositions & micro organic harmful substances
e.g. PCB, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, solvents
Industry, motor vehicles, agriculture, market-gardens, urban waste Change in the oxygen content, accelerated putrefaction of organic substances in water, damage to variety of species
Heavy metals
e.g. cadmium, lead, zinc, copper
Industry and mining They remain unchanged in sediments and wetlands, poison fish and in this way jump across to human beings via the food chain.
Pathogens & microbes
e.g. cryptosporidia, salmonella, shigella
Domestic waste water, livestock Spread of infectious diseases and parasites.
Nutrients
e.g. nitrogen and phosphor
Floating of agricultural crop land and urban areas, industrial waste Over-stimulated growth of algae, which consume oxygen in the water during rotting, which then suffocates microbes.
