Functions of water in our body

In our body, water forms the most essential part in terms of quantity. Approx. 60 percent of an adult’s body consists of water. For a new born, this level even reaches 70 to 80 percent. In order to feel well and to provide for optimal functioning of all the body’s functions, balanced water levels are particularly important: water fulfils numerous tasks in the human body.

As a transport agent and dissolvent, water is essential for ensuring that e.g. minerals ingested with food (e.g. magnesium, sodium, potassium and calcium) are transported to the body’s cells. Substances remaining from the metabolic processes are excreted again using water. Chemical reactions take place consistently in the cells, and these are only possible through water or with the involvement of water. If our body temperature is increased, e.g. during sports or due to fever, water acts as a heat conductor and it regulates the temperature through sweating.

In particular, the much lacking mineral magnesium contained in water fulfils various important functions. On the one hand, along with calcium, it acts as flavour-enhancer in water and, on the other hand, contributes to meeting our daily requirement of magnesium.
